Three ways to get your COE
- Through your lender (fastest). Lenders use VA's system to request it, and when VA already has your records it often comes back in minutes. We do this for you when you start your application.
- Online at VA.gov. Request it with your login; in many cases VA decides right away and you can download it.
- By mail with VA Form 26-1880, sent to the regional loan center listed on the form. This is the slowest.
What you may need, by status
| Your status | Document |
|---|---|
| Veteran | DD-214 showing character of service |
| Active duty | Statement of service signed by your commander, adjutant or personnel officer (name, SSN, date of birth, entry date, lost time, command) |
| Guard or Reserve, activated | DD-214 |
| Guard or Reserve, never activated, still serving | Statement of service with your creditable years |
| Guard, never activated, discharged | NGB Forms 22 and 23 |
| Surviving spouse receiving DIC | VA Form 26-1817 |
Tips
- Don't submit a second request while one is under review; it slows things down.
- Your COE shows your entitlement and whether you're exempt from the funding fee. See loan limits & entitlement.
- Guard and Reserve members: see our eligibility guide.
